This time I will discuss about various types of Gas and also the benefits and uses.


Food and beverage industry

We can see in making bread which functions as a bread developer with the help of yeast. For beverage products, especially carbonated drinks.

Fire extinguisher material

CO2 is sprayed on the fire through a fire hose so that the fire is not exposed to oxygen so it can stop the fire.


Chlorine is a chemical that is used as a disinfectant and bleach. At room temperature, gaseous chlorine is greenish yellow and has a strong odor.

Chlorine is usually used for mand water, swimming pools, drinking water, because chlorine has the effect of killing germs and E. coli bacteria and the price is very cheap. Besides that chlorine can also be used to whiten clothes. On the market chlorine is packaged in the form of various market brands that we can easily find.


We know that no living thing on earth does not need oxygen. Plants will grow well if the soil contains oxygen. Fish and all all living things live because of oxygen.


Is a gas that is available in nature but does not have destructive properties. The air we breathe everyday as much as 78% is Nitrogen. The oxygen element is actually less than 21%. The rest is water vapor, CO2 and concentrations of noble gases such as argon and neon that we can ignore. Because it is non-destructive and non-flammable, Nitrogen is the choice for F1, MotoGP, and the Aircraft Industry to become tire fill gas.
Excess Nitrogen is a tire performance indicated by stable air pressure (no increase in temperature due to hot weather and long driving), grip on the surface of the asphalt, and elasticity (flexibility) of rubber tires so that it feels more comfortable. So as to maintain this performance Nitrogen gas is needed because it has advantages over oxygen.


Hydrogen is the lightest gas in the world so it is often used as a balloon filler. In nature, hydrogen gas can be found in very small amounts of the atmosphere. While on an industrial scale, hydrogen can be produced from hydrocarbon and water compounds.

The benefits of hydrogen include

Energy field: is a clean energy source, because it does not leave residues or harmful gas emissions, only water is produced. Also used as rocket fuel.
Food and beverage industry: used in the process of hydrogenating amines and fatty acids.
Laboratory: H2 is used as a carrier gas in gas chromathography and other lab analysis tools.

Polymer: H2 is used as a raw material for making plastic, polyester and nylon.
Chemical industry: H2 gas is the raw material for making H2O2 or hydrogen peroxide.
Fertilizer industry: hydrogen is the raw material for making ammonia (NH3).
Oil and gas industry: used in the desulfurization process of fuel oil and gasoline.
Glass industry: hydrogen is used in the process of heat treatment hollow glass (oxy-hydrogen flame) and fiber optics.


Natural gas or commonly known as natural gas, a gas that is rich in methane content which is produced through decay by anaerobic bacteria from organic materials other than fiosil or called biogas. Biogas can be found in swamps, garbage disposal sites, as well as shelter of human and animal waste.

Natural gas can be dangerous because it is easily burned and causes an explosion, especially in a closed place. Today’s natural gas is an alternative material that is used by many people or other industries such as hospitals, apartments, PT, etc. Usually for gas hospitals what is needed is a medical gas installation. From year to year the use of natural gas continues to increase.


Methane gas is actually one of the dangerous gases, because this gas is one of the effects of the greenhouse effect caused by global warming on the earth. But in the hands of creative people at Talangagung Landfill, this gas is used as a substitute for gas used for cooking by the surrounding community. Therefore, in addition to reducing the impact of the greenhouse effect by utilizing methane gas as an alternative energy source, this methane gas can indeed reduce the impact of environmental pollution due to the accumulation of waste and reduce the area for garbage storage, it is very good to maintain environmental sustainability.

PT SMART Tbk conducted a project to utilize methane gas sourced from the processing of palm oil mill effluent at the Pelakar plant in Jambi. The biodigester system with engineered cover lagoon is applied to capture the methane gas and flow it to the Biogas Plant to be conditioned before being channeled to the Biogas Engine to generate electricity.


Ozone is a natural gas molecule that is easily soluble in water and non-toxic. In nature, ozone is found in the outer layer of the atmosphere and serves as a shield against ultra violet radiation from the sun that can cause skin cancer. On the surface of the earth ozone is recognized by the fresh antiseptic aroma that appears after thunder rain. Ozone is what makes you feel relaxed because you breathe fresh and clean air around the waterfall and on a choppy beach.

Ozone is a gas molecule consisting of 3 Oxygen atoms and has an O3 chemical formula. Ozone molecules are unstable and will always try to find a ‘target’ to be able to release one oxygen atom by oxidation, so that it can turn into a stable oxygen molecule (O2). Because of its powerful oxidizing properties, Ozone is very superior for disinfection (killing germs), detoxification (neutralizing toxic substances) and deodorization (eliminating unpleasant odors) in water and air.

In terms of water disinfection / sterilization, Ozone technology is the most superior and very effective. Ozone can destroy germs, bacteria, viruses, fungi, spores, cysts, mosses and other organic substances. In addition, it can neutralize excessive / toxic inorganic / mineral substances. The use of Ozone does not produce residual substances that endanger health. On the contrary, it will increase oxygen levels in the water so that it is fresher and healthier.


Ammonia is a chemical compound with NH3 formula. Usually this compound is found in the form of a gas with a distinctive sharp odor (called ammonia smell). Ammonia is the most important and most produced nitrogen compound. Ammonia benefits include making fertilizer, especially urea and ZA (Zwavelzur ammonium = ammonium sulfate)

The making of fertilizers in the Haber-Bosch way is by means of ammonia made on a large scale from nitrogen obtained from air, plus hydrogen (mostly produced from naturally occurring methane) which becomes a mixture of high pressure nitrogen and hydgrogen. Then it is recycled so that ammonia is formed and left until the condensation process occurs so that liquid ammonia (NH3) is formed which is ready to be moved to be processed into fertilizer. But before ammonia is produced through the Haber-Bosch process, the main source of nitrogen compounds for industry is minerals that must be mined and removed thousands of kilometers away.

Hydrazine is one of the nitrogen compounds used as rocket fuel.

In an ice plant, liquid ammonia is used as a coolant (refrigerant) because liquid ammonia is volatile and will absorb heat, causing a freezing effect

Freon is a gas that is widely used for cooling, for example in piloks (paint in bottles) if we hold it will feel cold because there are freons,
Freon is also used in refrigerators for refrigeration, so that the temperature in the room can be as low as possible.

Freon is used in cooling machines (Air Conditioner = AC)
Freon is used in hairspray (hair fragrance)

Freon is used in canned insect repellent which can be sprayed if its chemical formula is CFC (Chlor Fuoro Carbon), which is a compound containing Cl atoms which is very dangerous.
If released in the air when piloks is used automatically freon is released into the air, if the air conditioner or refrigerator is used and the freon is leaking, then the freon is released in the air.

If too much freon is released in the air it will go to space and react with ozone (the chemical formula is O3) because the Cl atoms that cause react with ozone, so that ozone which is supposed to block the sun’s heat will decrease so that the sun enters too much earth.
